HISTORY

The Duangkaew Foundation was founded in 1988, by a group of plastic surgeons in Bangkok, Thailand.  Their main objective was to ease the plight of the handicapped, the disabled and the needy in the countryside and provide them access to medical facilities and personnel.  Duangkaew strives to bring to the poor, including plastic surgery to correct birth defects, disfigurement resulting from accidents, unsightly protuberances, etc.  Originally, Duangkaew directed its efforts mainly to helping children suffering from birth defects, harelip, cleft palate, tumors, abnormal organs, scars, bumps, burns, skin stains, etc.  Currently, Duangkaew is directing its aid to the general population, including the young and the old.

The surgical teams include specialists in Plastic and reconstructive surgery and volunteers. They travel to the remotest provinces to deliver their services to the poor without discriminate on the basis race, creed, color, religion or national origin, their expedition team of surgeon and volunteer staff has also rendered medical services to patients in the neighboring countries.  Help is not limited to medical services, but also includes help to needy rural students and schools, nutrition (lunch) projects, donation of educational, sports and utility equipment, vocational training, etc.

OBJECTIVES

The Duangkaew Foundation was established with the basic aim to helping the disabled and the disadvantaged achieve a greater degree of happiness to become respected members of society.  The Foundation has three primary objectives:

1. To help the disabled and the disadvantaged

2. To promote medical research

3. To spread the faith in Buddhism

The Foundation realizes that drugs alone cannot treat the suffering of the impoverished and the disabled in the isolated areas.  It is very difficult for these people to travel to the city due to their state of poverty.  In addition, the rural hospitals have shortages of doctors, including specialists with specialized equipment.  Only medical specials, not normally found in rural areas or provincial hospitals, can eliminate the physical deformities of these patients.  The Duangkaew Foundation seeks to bridge this gap.

OPERATIONS

The Foundation functions in collaboration with the provincial public health facilities, private and public hospitals.  Their personnel establish locally the needs, the number of patients who require special medical and surgical treatments.  The hospitals cooperate with the Foundation by preparing patients for surgery on the allotted appointment date.  A team of 10-15, Including doctors, nurses and volunteers, is required.  Since most of the staff are Foundation contributors, they are limited in the amount of time they can contribute. Thus, each expedition can only last 2-to-3 days.  Surgery is conducted on 30-50 cases.  During this 2 to 3 days period, operations are performed continuously from 8 a.m. to midnight.  The provincial hospitals’ medical personnel prepare 20-30 patients per day ready for operation.  In the meantime, the provincial hospitals conduct their daily routines uninterruptedly.  However, if problems arise beyond the normal care that the provincial hospitals can provide, the hospitals normally contact the Foundation for advice, and seek our doctors’ help.  Surgeries are conducted entirely free of charge.  Expeditions are undertaken at least once or twice a month thus treating approximately 300 – 500 patients annually.

OTHER PROJECTS

In addition to the campaign to eradicate disabilities in rural areas, the Foundation is also involved in other projects, such as:

1. Overall help to children and the disadvantaged.  The Foundation asks for and collects donations of funds, clothing, shoes, blankets, educational and sports equipment, and food to be distributed to countryside schools. 

2. To research treatment of cancer.  Cancer is very painful to patients, in terms of mental and physical trauma. New Treatment of cancer is carried out and the Foundation participates in these projects by providing funding for medical equipment, medicine, and experimentation. 

3. To promote and spread Buddhism.  The Foundation hopes to bring the best of Dharma doctrine in Buddhism to be the guiding principle of the individual.  The Foundation has organized and sponsored activities such as training of Dharma conduct, meditation, formal and informal robe giving ceremonies and distributing Dharma books.  The Foundation also raised funds to the Wat Pa Chalermphrakiat at Huay Kon Subdistrict, Nan Province. And build a Dharma Hall for Karmasthan (a higher form of meditation) at Nakhonchaisai in Nakhon Pathom Province now it open for meditation courses twice a month (3,5,7, days courses) all for free of charge.

4. To establish the School Supported Project to help children to develop both physical and mental and province with the strongest foundation for future education including vocational training program, Plant for Lunch, etc.  The Foundation also sponsored and subsidized “The Dream School Camp” at selected school in rural area by expanded the school facilities and by provided assorted operational equipment etc.

ACHIEVEMENTS

1. Campaign against disabilities and deformities in rural areas.

•   1988 - 2006: 371 activities were carried out to 7,300 patients.

1. Help to children and the disadvantaged in rural areas.

•   1989 - 2006: 210 activities were performed to distribute educational, sports equipment and clothing to 33,500 recipients.

• 1995 - 2006: 14,000 flood victims were provided assistance on 21 occasions.

• 1994 - 2006:  distributed blankets to relieve cold on 26 occasions, 19,500 recipients were helped.

1. Research and treatment of cancer by laser.

                   Donation was done on 77 cancer patients the expenses and treatment were totally free of charge (3,300,000 bath),

1. Promote faith in Buddhism.

• 1991 – 2006:  distribution of 180,000 Dharma books.

• 1989 – 2006:  annual formal robe giving ceremony 18,850,000 bath.

  แนะนำองค์กร : ศัลยแพทย์ตกแต่งกลุ่มหนึ่งที่มีจุดมุ่งหมาย และอุดมการณ์เดียวกันได้รวมตัวกันออกบริการรักษา และผ่าตัดบรรเทาความทุกข์ทรมานให้กับผู้ป่วยที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ชนบทห่างไกล โดยไม่คิดค่าใช้จ่ายใดๆ ผู้ป่วยที่เข้ารับการบำบัดรักษา ได้แก่ ผู้ป่วยที่มีความผิดปกติมาตั้งแต่กำเนิด เช่น ปากแหว่ง เพดานโหว่ ก้อนเนื้องอก ความพิการที่เกิดจากอุบัติเหตุต่างๆ แผลเป็นจากไฟไหม้ น้ำร้อนลวก ที่สามารถแก้ไขด้วยศัลยกรรมตกแต่งและสามารถรักษาผ่าตัดได้ในโรงพยาบาลตามพื้นที่นั้นๆ ในช่วงต้น กลุ่มศัลยแพทย์ได้ร่วมออกหน่วยแพทย์ พร้อมกับคณะแพทย์มูลนิธิ หู คอ จมูก ชนบท ต่อมาเมื่อมีผู้ป่วยเข้ารับการบำบัดรักษามากขึ้น จึงได้แยกออกมาดำเนินการในนามของมูลนิธิดวงแก้ว

  วัตถุประสงค์ขององค์กร

  มูลนิธิได้ตั้งวัตถุประสงค์หลักไว้ 3 ประการ คือ

              1. เพื่อช่วยเหลือผู้ด้อยโอกาสและทุพพลภาพ โดยการป้องกัน การบำบัดรักษาแก้ไข และหาทางให้โอกาสเขาเหล่านั้นเข้าร่วมในสังคมได้อย่างมีคุณภาพ

              2. เพื่อส่งเสริมการค้นคว้าวิจัยทางการแพทย์ โดยมุ่งเน้นการพัฒนาบุคลากร และเทคโนโลยีที่เหมาะสม เพื่อก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์ต่อส่วนรวม

              3. เพื่อส่งเสริมและเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนา โดยการจัดอบรมปฏิบัติธรรม จัดกิจกรรมเผยแพร่ จัดทำสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์ และสื่อมวลชนต่างๆ เช่น จัดทำสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์และสื่อสารมวลชนต่างๆ เช่น วิทยุ โทรทัศน์ ซีดี ฯลฯ
